A last-minute reprieve is keeping Malcolm X Academy and all the schools on the closure list open for another school year, but an inadequate SFUSD budget may threaten closure again.

Nestled in the heart of Hunters Point, San Francisco, Malcolm X Elementary School has been a cornerstone of the community since the 1960s. Originally known as Sir Francis Drake Elementary School, it has a rich legacy steeped in history, resilience, and the promise of a better future for our children. As we face contemporary challenges in education, it is imperative that we come together to ensure that Malcolm X Elementary remains open – not just for today, but for generations to come.

Our commitment to equity and community

Malcolm X Elementary embodies a steadfast commitment to equity, family engagement and community support. These principles are foundational to the school’s mission, ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have access to a quality education. The strong partnerships between staff and parents and guardians enhance our efforts to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. This collaborative spirit is crucial for student success; it fosters a sense of belonging and motivates them to excel. We recognize the violence in our community, which underscores the need to protect both our children and their education.

A dedicated and supported staff

The strength of Malcolm X Elementary lies in its exceptional teaching staff. Our principal and educators are dedicated, passionate and committed to nurturing not only the minds but also the spirits and bodies of every student, going above and beyond the call of duty.

However, to fully harness this commitment, they require robust support, including modern educational tools, updated technology and access to high-quality learning materials. Budgeting for these resources must be a priority for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to ensure that our teachers can provide the high-caliber education that every child needs and deserves; after all, they are our future.

Modernized facilities and resources

Malcolm X Elementary has long struggled with insufficient resources and urgent renovation needs. For years, our school has been overlooked, receiving only false promises of support. Living in one of the wealthiest cities in the nation, it is clear that both the city and SFUSD must acknowledge the needs of families, children and the community as a whole.

Our school requires critical updates to facilities – including access to clean drinking water, improved structural integrity and classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Students should not have to learn in outdated, dilapidated environments that stifle their potential. Investing in these improvements will create a conducive learning environment that fosters creativity and innovation among our young minds.

Breaking the cycle of poverty

Hunters Point has faced significant socio-economic challenges over the decades. Once a vibrant, multicultural neighborhood, it has been plagued by violence, unemployment and inadequate educational opportunities. Malcolm X Elementary stands as a beacon of hope – a place where children can embark on a journey of learning and growth. By keeping this school open and supported, we can help break the cycle of poverty and provide our children with the foundation they need to build successful futures. Revitalizing Malcolm X Elementary will instill a sense of pride and ownership in our community.

The path forward

Latoya Pitcher, an SFUSD parent, along with her children, speaks out against the planned closure of Malcolm X Academy. “Malcolm X is amazing,” she declared. “They educate our kids, but no one talks about what these kids go through at other schools. They’re put into special education classes. Here, we have community and love. Closing our school in the name of capitalism is not OK,” says Pitcher. – Photo: Kevin Epps

It is imperative that we advocate for a supportive budget that prioritizes the needs of Malcolm X Elementary. The time for action is now. We must urge the School Board to allocate funds toward necessary renovations, modern educational tools, and resources that our students and teachers desperately need.

By preserving and enhancing Malcolm X Elementary School, we are not merely maintaining a beloved institution; we are cultivating the growth of our community’s future leaders. As stewards of this vital resource, let us unite in our mission to ensure that underserved communities and all the children attending schools in Hunters Point have access to a first-class education that equips them for success in an ever-changing world – a world that is continually advancing, in which we must participate rather than be left behind.

In conclusion, there are philanthropists, entertainers, business owners and athletes whom I (and hopefully we) can appeal to for support in building a better school. No matter our individual circumstances, let us rally together – community members, educators, parents and stakeholders around Malcolm X Elementary School.

Every child deserves a top-notch education, and every community deserves the resources necessary for success. Let’s make our voices heard and advocate for the future of our children, for the heart of Hunters Point beats within the walls of Malcolm X Elementary School.

Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended, taught, supported, advocated for or served in any capacity to help Malcolm X Elementary School. Your contributions are truly appreciated.
