All Wicked fans, assemble. The time has come – the Wicked movie is dropping in cinemas on Friday 22 November. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have won our hearts and minds with their red carpet looks and our first look at their performances as Glinda and Elphaba respectively. We can’t wait to see them do the beloved stage show justice.
But be warned: it only covers the first half of the stage show’s story (despite having the same runtime as the entire stage show combined). We will be treated to a Wicked part 2 as well, to complete the cinematic story.
Why was Wicked split into two parts? Well, director Jon M Chu and producer Marc Platt have said it was because they didn’t want to cut songs or characters to fit the story into one movie.
So, a little bit like the stage show, the movie will be split into two halves. We’ve got a little bit to wait for the second instalment, though.
Here’s everything we know so far about Wicked part 2.
Wicked part 2 release date
Sadly, we’ll have to wait a whole year until chapter 2 of the Wicked movie series drops. The release date for Wicked 2 is Friday 21 November 2025.
Wicked part 2 cast
The second movie has already been filmed, so we know that the cast we know and love from part one will be returning, including Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard of Oz), Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Ethan Slater (Boq), Marissa Bode (Nessarose), Peter Dinklage (voice of Doctor Dillamond), Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James.
We’ll update this article in the event of any new castings for Wicked part 2.
Wicked part 2 plot
At the moment, we’re basing our plot predictions for Wicked part 2 on what happens in the second act of the stage show. It doesn’t look like there will be any new characters introduced, but you never know how the Wicked movie universe might expand the story. You never know, we might get to see more of Dorothy, who features very briefly in the Wicked plotline.
The second act of the stage shows sees a man hunt for Elphaba begin, led by Fiyero. While Glinda has been given the mantle of “Glinda the Good” by the Wizard of Oz himself, Elphaba is now officially known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Meanwhile, her sister Nessarose has become the Wicked Witch of the East, a cruel governor over Munchkinland.
When Nessarose is crushed by Dorothy’s house as a result of her arrival in Oz, Elphaba abandons her plans to do right by the people and animals of Oz and vows to actually be “wicked”. There’s nothing quite like a revenge storyline, is there?
