This year’s service comes after a challenging year for the Princess of Wales. Earlier this month, Prince William described the past twelve months as “brutal” in a speech during their visit to Cape Town. Kate underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024, which revealed the presence of cancer. She completed chemotherapy in September and has, since, gradually returned to royal duties. In a video marking the end of her treatment, Kate expressed gratitude for the support she received, stating, “Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.”

These personal experiences appear to have shaped the theme of this year’s carol service: love and empathy. The event will honour individuals across the UK who have supported others through tough times. A Kensington Palace spokesperson explained, “The service will provide a moment to reflect on the importance of love and empathy and how much we need each other, especially in the most difficult times of our lives.”

The event will celebrate community heroes nominated by charities associated with the royal family and by lord lieutenants representing counties nationwide. Supported by the Royal Foundation, the service will host approximately 1,600 guests, including members of the Royal Family and individuals recognised for their acts of kindness, volunteer work, and dedication to others.

Musical performances will include Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean, and Gregory Porter, adding to the festive atmosphere. Alongside the main service at Westminster Abbey, fifteen “Together at Christmas” services will take place across the UK, including at venues such as the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and Blackpool Tower Circus. These additional events aim to highlight the power of community support and the impact of empathy and kindness.

The “Together at Christmas” carol service, launched in 2021, is quickly becoming a cherished tradition. The inaugural event celebrated individuals and organisations who went above and beyond to support their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year since, the service has brought together community heroes, frontline workers, volunteers, and members of the royal family to recognise exceptional acts of kindness and compassion.

The announcement follows Kate’s recent gradual return to public duties. Over the recent Remembrance weekend, the Princess made two significant appearances: attending the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening and the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph on Sunday.
