Is Netflix’s The Maddness season 2 happening?

There are thrillers and then there is The Madness. It’s hard to remember the last time a series was this gripping and this addictive. The eight-part series landed on Netflix just last week — and yes, we’ve already raced through every episode. Now, our only question is: will we be getting The Madness season 2?

Created by Stephen Belber, the series stars Colman Domingo as Muncie Daniels, a political consultant-turned-TV pundit who, while on sabbatical, witnesses the murder an infamous white supremacist. When Muncie is framed for the crime, he finds himself fighting to reveal the truth. It’s an edge-of-your-seat mystery set within an eerily familiar world of misinformation, conspiracy theories and far-right populism. It’s a show that, being released mere weeks after the re-election of Donald Trump, feels both timely and prescient.

As Belber told The Hollywood Reporter, he conceived the show “soon after Jan. 6.” He added, “I was just looking around for something original to write, and I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll break the rule, and I’ll lean into the zeitgeist a little bit rather than try to avoid it.’”

So, will there be a The Madness season 2 on Netflix to dig our teeth into? Here’s everything we know so far.

What happened in The Madness season 1?

After being framed for the murder of Mark Simon, Muncie uncovers what turns out to be a global conspiracy. Although Muncie finds himself taking on the richest, most powerful people in the world in an attempt to prove his innocence, by the end of season 1, he has, somehow, succeeded.

After initially joining forces with Julia, Muncie eventually discovers that she was involved in the plot to frame him. He finds evidence of the conspiracy on her computer and managed to clear his name publicly. In the final episode, Muncie delves even deeper into the conspiracy when he discovers that Rodney Kraintz, an investor, has been spreading white supremacist misinformation and disinformation online using numerous computers and servers. Muncie momentarily holds his gun up at Rodney, but ultimately, he decides not to shoot.

“Muncie believes in redemption,” Domingo told Tudum. “He believes in the good in all people. … If Muncie did kill in cold blood, it would change his whole DNA.”
