Dyson Airwrap review: product deep-dive
When Dyson first launched the Airwrap Multi-Styler, it turned the beauty world on its perfectly blowdried head. The revolutionary device ditched traditional hairdryer technology in order to break the boundaries of hair tool engineering. The result? A model that cleverly manipulates air flow that effortlessly styles while eliminating the need for high heat, therefore reducing hair damage.
For the uninitiated, the Dyson Airwrap is the culmination of six years of product development, £24 million in research, 103 granted patents and 170 pending patents. Packaged inside a sleek leather presentation case, the Airwrap is equipped with ‘Coanda effect’ technology, where a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and due to differences in pressures, the air flow follows that surface. Think of it a bit like when you put a spoon under the tap – the water cascades off the spoon in the same shape. Well, it’s like that – but with air. The Airwrap uses the Coanda effect to whip sections of hair around its barrel, which in turn sets it in a perfect curl or beachy waves, depending on how you style it.
It’s equipped with various attachments – including a Coanda dryer (designed to rough dry the roots and smooth flyways), barrels (one 40mm barrel for looser waves and another 30mm barrel for tighter curls – both designed to switch between clockwise and anti-clockwise direction with a simple twist at the top), a diffuser attachment, a firm smoothing brush and a large round volumising brush. You can also opt to purchase other additional attachments, such as the wide-tooth comb, which has been designed with afro and curly hair in mind for root to tip drying.
Each tool also comes with a detangling comb and a filter cleaning brush. Colour-wise, you’ll be pleased to discover that the Dyson Airwrap is now available in the latest Strawberry Bronze/Blush Pink hue (which also happens to be my personal favourite).
Weighing roughly 0.5kg, the tool also features three heat settings (including the cool shot mode) and three speed settings – each controlled by the two handy switches positioned at the top of the device. All sounds good in theory, but what about when it’s put to the test? Here’s the full lowdown.
Dyson Airwrap review: GLAMOUR road test
As is the case with any high-tech devices, it takes a bit of getting used to. Although I found the controls pretty intuitive, it did take me a few days to learn the ins-and-outs and figure out the best way to style my hair. So my advice is to be patient and take your time to get to know this tool. Trust me when I tell you that once you do get the hang of it, it will cut down the styling time by half.
One of my favourite things about the Airwrap is just how speedy it is for day-to-day styling. Right after initially towel-drying my hair post-shower, I tend to reach for for the Coanda dryer attachment to focus on drying my roots and rough-drying the rest of my hair to the point when it’s still damp but 70% dry. If I’m in a rush, I simply grab the firm smoothing brush and gently comb my hair through the lengths for that silky smooth straight result. And if I’m after a bit more volume, I would use the round volumising brush to “zhuzh”-up my fringe and upper layers for that effortless look. This whole process usually takes me no longer that 5-8 minutes in total, which is perfect for those busy morning routines.
