This stylish three-bedroom apartment within a beautifully preserved Art Deco block in Sydney’s Bondi, seamlessly blends warm tones, delicate blues, and the timeless architectural charm of the original building.
The renovation aimed to combine the building’s distinctive character with a fresh, contemporary design, reflecting the unique personality of its architect owners.
Studio Pulp director, architect Ben Selke, says: “The project began when a young architect couple approached us to help reimagine their home while preserving its rich architectural heritage.
“Situated in a red brick Art Deco block, the apartment boasted an array of beautifully preserved period features, including curved glass windows, Bakelite door handles, intricate coffered ceilings, and original skirting and architrave details. These elements provided a great foundation for a design that sought to balance this heritage with modern sensibility.”
At the heart of the renovation was the creation of a new open-plan kitchen and dining area, accompanied by a refreshed bathroom. Beyond these major updates, the entire apartment was given a fresh lease on life with new paint, carpet, timber flooring, feature lighting, and selected furniture pieces.
“Drawing inspiration from its Bondi location, the design embraced a serene, neutral aesthetic,” adds Ben. “The palette, composed of soft sandy tones, delicate blues, and earthy terracottas, was intentionally calming and versatile, ensuring broad appeal for the clients’ future plans.”
Soft, warm tones were chosen for the walls, flooring, and major furnishings. These hues were complemented by subtle blues, which were carefully woven throughout the space to add depth and gentle vibrancy.
“From the cushions on the couch to the accents on the walls, these soft blues created a cohesive palette that added richness and tranquillity without overwhelming the senses.”
A unique aspect of the project was the clients’ extensive collection of art and artefacts, which played a pivotal role in shaping the design. Ben explained the interiors were carefully crafted to showcase these treasured pieces while maintaining a cohesive, tactile, and handmade quality throughout.
“The clients, passionate about art, desired to make their personal collection a focal point of the design. We wanted to make sure the pieces didn’t feel like they were added as an afterthought. Instead, we wanted them to feel like a natural part of the design. Every artwork and artefact was chosen not only for its visual appeal but also for its ability to contribute texture, colour, and movement to the space.”
The end result is a living environment that marries original architecture with modern design sensibilities. Every detail—from the colour palette to the furniture selection, the arrangement of artwork, and the choice of textiles—feels intentional and cohesive. The design of the apartment allows for an easy flow between rooms, creating a continuous experience that feels both elevated and intimate.
“This renovation successfully balances the building’s historical character with the modern needs and tastes of its owners,” Ben adds. “The thoughtful design choices, from the selection of colours to the curation of art, have transformed the apartment into a harmonious space that blends history, beauty, and comfort. It is now a home that embodies a fusion of elegance, functionality, and personal expression.”
