John Galliano shocks the industry, exiting Margiela

Following his attention-grabbing Maison Margiela Spring 2024 show, and a fruitful decade together, John Galliano is exiting the luxury label. Industry insiders are already questioning if Galliano is finally heading back to Dior.

Galliano took to Instagram to announce: “The rumours… Everyone wants to know and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, all will be revealed. For now, I take this time to express my immense gratitude. I continue to atone and will never stop dreaming.” But he was yet to divulge his next moves.

Employees at Maison Margiela were informed of the change Wednesday just ahead of the company Christmas party, according to WWD.

Galliano was named Creative Director at Maison Margiela in 2014. This was his grand comeback after he was let go from Dior in 2011 after a slew of racist and antisemitic rants. Since then, he has boosted the fashion show known for its tabby boots and contrast stitching, to cult status.

Renzo Rosso, Chairman of Maison Margiela owner OTB Group, said in a statement: “Working with John was one of the most significant and impactful experiences of my life. He mentored me and showed me his vision, enriching me culturally and allowing me to bring some of that vision and culture to the rest of the Group.

“I feel privileged to have worked with two legends like Martin [Margiela] and John. Martin made this house a reference and an icon, John made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world.”

Despite showering his co-worker Galliano with endless gratitude, Rosso has yet to disclose Margeila’s succession plan.

This announcement caps off a year of twists and turns within the luxury industry. We’ve witnessed a conveyor belt of Creative Director appointments and exits from Chanel and Celine to Bottega Veneta and Missoni.

Just last week, Julian Klausner was appointed Creative Director at Dries Van Noten. This came after the label’s Founder stepped down earlier this year.
