20 Era-Defining Models’ First British Vogue Covers

“The birth of a supermodel unfolds like a fashion remake of the creation story,” British Vogue’s fashion features director Julia Hobbs writes in the introduction to her profile of Angelina Kendall in the January 2025 issue. “The world before she appears, formless and desolate, then the lights suddenly flick on and there she is.” Hobbs trailed Kendall throughout Paris Fashion Week for the story, and found the 19-year-old to be wise far beyond her years. “Your looks get you to the door, but your personality opens it and allows you to have longevity and to connect with people, and create magical things,” the London-based, Brazilian-Kiwi model says. “Because really, without one or the other, you’re just not, unfortunately, as brutal as it sounds, you’re just not gonna have a career.”

In honour of Kendall’s inauguration into the supermodel sisterhood, revisit some of the most memorable model debuts on the cover of British Vogue.
