Metallics! Glitter! Gemstones! ’Tis the season to experiment, beauty-wise – but how to get your glam to last all night? Vogue asked three experts – Laura Mercier’s education and events manager Jess Kohn and make-up artists Adeola Gboyega and Emily Wood – to share their tips.
The prep
Start by nourishing cheeks with a rich moisturiser such as Revolution’s Revolution Pro Miracle Water Cream or Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Water Cream. “This creates a solid base to work on,” explains Wood, “so you don’t have to apply too much product or setting powder.” Using a primer before make-up application (but after moisturiser) is also key. “A good primer will extend the wear of your make-up and enhance the appearance of your skin, so you don’t have to worry about your foundation becoming patchy or dull throughout the night,” says Kohn.
The main event
If you’re opting to wear foundation, Gboyega recommends “something buildable and breathable with a matte formula that’s oil-free” such as MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid Foundation or Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. When it comes to blush, jelly lip and cheek stains are great, especially when paired with a powder, says Wood. “Start by applying Revolution Jelly Blush to the apples of your cheeks followed by your powdered blush – this way the powder has something tacky to stick onto, creating a more long-lasting finish.”
Meanwhile, opt for an eyeshadow in stick form, which is easy to touch up when you’re out. “Swipe on, blend in with your fingers and go,” instructs Gboyega. As for your lips? To avoid having to constantly pause the fun and reapply your lipstick, choose a stain instead. Wonderskin has nailed a formula that the Vogue team loves.
Finally, know that when it comes to setting powder, your method of application can make all the difference. “My favourite technique is to pick up a bit of powder on a puff, fold the puff in half to crush the powder into the velour, then press and roll it onto the skin. This will seal in your make-up for up to 16 hours,” Kohn reveals.
The touch-ups
The last thing you need when you’re out and about is a powder disaster, so keep things simple with a portable setting spray. It will “lock in your look, keeping everything perfectly in place no matter the weather”, Kohn advises.
