The cinematic moment of 2024 is here. Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, has finally hit the big screen.
Now, we need to know every single detail of the behind-the-scenes process, including exactly where the Wizard of Oz prequel story was filmed.
What’s perhaps most surprising about Wicked‘s filming location choices is that filming took place across the UK. Seeing as it’s one of Hollywood’s biggest titles of the year, we might’ve expected filming to go all over the world – and yet, all was filmed in the United Kingdom.
Here’s everything we know about Wicked‘s filming locations.
So, where was Wicked filmed?
London / South East
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Wicked team travelled far and wide to exotic and far-flung locations to get the Oz look. But actually, a large part of the filming took place in studios such as Sky Studios Elstree in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire – near London – which also hosted filming for Paddington in Peru. The two winter movies will be the first two to have filmed at the studios, and will also host two big 2025 films – Jurassic Park blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Wicked‘s Jonathan Bailey, and the upcoming Bridget Jones sequel, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy.
“We built huge, impressively detailed sets on the brand-new stages at Sky Studios Elstree, which provided the perfect studio environment for the shoot, with the bonus of it being in close proximity to London,” Wicked producer Marc Platt explained.
Filming was also carried out at the nearby Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, where the Harry Potter movies were filmed, no less. Filming for the scene where Glinda arrives at Shiz University in a pink sailboat was also reportedly filmed in Seven Sisters Country Park in Seaford, Sussex.
