Remember that time when TikTok decided that side partings were for “old people”? Us millennials – geriatric ones included – have certainly not forgotten how this beloved hair tweak of ours was hurtfully labelled as antiquated by Gen-Z. We may belong to different generations, but there are some hair trends (including side partings) that transcend ages and eras, and which I maintain can work on pretty much anyone.
See Lily-Rose Depp (25 and therefore Gen-Z) at the Los Angeles premiere of Nosferatu. With her flaxen lengths parted in the centre – where else? – Depp wore a duo of neat plaits at the front of her hairline. Looping over the top of her ears and pinned into her hair, the detail featured a shiny curl at ends, which twirled over the top of her smooth lengths. A cute look beloved by Gen-Z, it felt kind of Tudor in its sensibility, but with a glossy modern twist – bravo to hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, who created it.
That’s the thing about hair trends – they all come from somewhere. Depp’s look may be a style embraced by today’s youth, but it’s not like us millennials can’t pull it off too. The secret? Follow Depp’s lead and ensure your plaits are as polished as possible – these expertly woven braids have a lustrous finish and subsequently offer a different appeal to the more DIY, bohemian-style looks we all used to do way back when. So brush up on your technique, amp up on shine (see some of our favourite formulas below) and give it a go.
