For anyone with a seasonal wardrobe rotation, there’s a risk that dressing for certain times of year can become a bit clichéd: think florals for spring (groundbreaking), jewel-tones for autumn, Fair Isle knits for winter and, of course, sequins for New Year’s Eve. While there is nothing wrong with leaning into the classics – they’ve earned their place in the fashion hall of fame for a reason – for those of us who like to keep things interesting, it can be surprisingly hard to go off the beaten track and find something that feels definitively fresh.
New Year’s Eve, in particular, is an event that can be loaded with expectations, not only of the social kind (everyone! must! be! having! fun! at! all! times!), but also of the sartorial variety – come December, everything in fashion stores seems to be laden with sequins: dresses, skirts, accessories, jackets, underwear, you name it. But if you have something else in mind to ring in 2025, allow us to provide you with some feel-good, sequin-free styling inspiration.
It probably goes without saying, but shopping second-hand is the easiest way to add a point of difference into your New Year’s Eve party outfit. Whether it’s a pair of Prada Mary-Janes, a shaggy Penny Lane coat or a cult Gucci Horsebit bag, just one pre-loved piece can have the power to transform your ensemble into something truly standout.
We also love the idea of looking to films, archival imagery, or generally any cultural references that bring you joy, for fashion inspiration. Why not give a little Marissa Cooper in The OC with a halterneck top, flared jeans and shoulder bag? Or channel Tom Ford for Gucci with a red velvet suit and pale blue shirt, as seen on Gwyneth Paltrow (twice!) – just add a tie for a very-of-the-moment twist. But then again, you also can’t go wrong with a really good party dress, and Christopher Kane X Self-Portrait’s rhinestone mini (or, in fact, the whole collection) is the perfect alternative to the many sequined styles around right now. It’s a showstopper that you’re sure to bring out year after year.
